I'm a QANTAS gold member flying from LON > MEL via SG. My wife is QANTAS silver and on a separate booking. We fly out tomorrow and as soon as I booked my flight I put in for a points upgrade for business and premium. I also purchased a flex ticket as I've long understood the priority order of how QANTAS upgrades. Well so I thought....
About two weeks ago my wife received an email for an invite to bid for an upgrade and I didn't. This baffled me as I would expect any QANTAS status member to have the opportunity to bid (points and dollars) for an upgrade. We put in a bid for my wife to get upgraded but as I understand it, she and others that made a bid will instantly get preference above me because they are obviously offering dollars and not just points like me.
What I don't understand is why wouldn't QANTAS offer me the ability to bid for an upgrade as well? Is there something I'm missing?
My assumption of how QANTAS INTERNATIONAL upgrades work in priority order:
1. Elite FF status 2. QANTAS club membership 3. Fare of your ticket (highest to lowest) 4. Timing of your upgrade request (hence I put in early)
I'm aware that the domestic is different.
My question to the group is should you wait to request an upgrade via points until after you get a upgrade bid request? or how does the hierarchy work?
Classic reward upgrades (points upgrades) are always processed before bid upgrades regardless of status.
To quote Qantas “ Bid Now Upgrade offers will be considered after requests for Classic Upgrade Rewards^ have been processed and confirmed.”
Hence everyone with a classic reward request should in theory be upgraded before entering the bid section. You likely would have been offered a bid upgrade if you didn't submit a class reward request.
Hence if you have the points to do it request the upgrade straight way. If you don't have enough points or wish to split with cash you'll need to wait for the bid invitation.

Would love to know if you managed to score the classic upgrade. I have been unsuccessful, on both occasions where I requested for classic upgrade. I guess the Business cabin on both flights was just full and being a Plat was not good enough :-( .

oh he won't know until QF have exhausted every opportunity to eek every dollar out of those seats, then they reluctantly offer them to their FF customers....

Bid now upgrades are processed after classic rewards (points).
