I've got to go from MEL to AKL in a few months and have been trying to find an airline that does this and earn VA status credits/velocity points. AirNZ is no-go so does anyone know which airline can do this?
I don’t think you can do this without transiting somewhere. I think the two best options for you would be:
Fly Virgin to Queenstown and then Air NZ domestically to Auckland (this flight won’t get you any SCs or points but you could credit them to another programme such as KrisFlyer).
Fly Virgin to Adelaide and then Qatar to Auckland.
The second option would get you the most SCs/points and probably be more comfortable, but would almost certainly take longer.

I think chasing SCs is going to cost me $$$ and lots of time. It may be easier to do AirNZ from MEL-AKL. Get the job done and come back with minimal fuss.
