Does anyone know why when looking at a booking to Penang, you can put in Perth as the Origin and flights via Singapore on SIA then onto Penang with Silkair are offered, as are flights via Melbourne on VA, then via Singapore onto Penang, but if you try to book Melbourne to Penang, apparently there are no flights. Has this got something to do with codeshare agreements?
Hi SaltyJ, this seems weird. I also tried via the Virgin Australia website and there were no flights coming up. However, trying with Itasoftware I do get flights. This software does not allow you to book, but you can print out details (including the IATA codes the travel agent needs) and book it at your preferred travel agent. Flights you want to look at are:
VA 5518 dept MEL 10:25AM arr SIN 4:15PM 7h 50m Boeing 777
Layover in SIN 2h 45m
VA 5749 dept SIN 7:00PM arr PEN 8:25PM 1h 25m Airbus A320
VA 5748 dept PEN 9:15PM arr SIN 10:40PM 1h 25m Airbus A320
Layover in SIN 1h 15m VA 5517 dept SIN 11:55PM arr MEL 9:15AM 7h 20m Boeing 777
There is a flight departing MEL in the afternoon as well (3.45pm VA5520) but that gives you more than 10hrs in SIN as layover.
I have also been unable to book certain routings via the Virgin Australia website in the past, but I use Expedia to book. I checked Expedia and it allows you to book the routing that KG mentions above. Once the flights are booked, they appear in your Velocity account more or less immediately as a Virgin ticket.

apologies for the messy format btw, copy pasted things in a rush and obviously that did not keep the source formatting.

No problem! If you want to give it a crack yourself, here is the link for Itasoftware:
