In my opinion, if one is privileged enough to be inside a lounge at any airport, then it would be nice to consider others who may not be able to afford it.
Whilst the staff at the QF LAX lounge may be paid more, their income would still be much lower than most of the customers (if not all) - so US$ 1--4 does not hurt.
I keep a stack of US$ 1 notes with me in my laptop bag - so little risk of "no cash"
