Educate yourself, armchair economist!
Qantas did fly a lot of Aussies home, but the flights were dedicated and not regular like Qatar. If Qantas was operating regular international flights during the time AU's borders were closed, they would have gone bankrupt and it would have drained the f*ck out of what was remaining in their business. Qantas is run as a private corporation, not a petro govt. subsidary like Qatar......
Other airlines that were run as private corporations also didn't fly here when AU was closed. Qatar could because they're not really a corporation, they're a govt subsidiary get huge state payments from gas and oil ventures so they could afford to do AU flights at loss without harming themselves. Even if Qantas was owned by our govt, I doubt AU Govt would have been able to finance regular international Qantas flights during the pandemic because we don't tax our fossil fuel industry enough......

Pathetic? My post is an opinion backed up with logical economic reasoning and facts. Your anti-Qantas post was a childish, low-effort troll post with no argument whatsoever and just insults. Has (your employer?) Qatar Airways run out of legitimate arguments? Or have they never had them in the first place? Qatar’s whole campaign is based on fear and lies to make gullible Aussies hate Qantas and meatride Qatar’s ambitions for an unprecedented capacity expansion into this great country which must be resoundingly rejected.Becky1

These decisions at the end of the day are good for Australia in the long-term. It protects the country from job losses and reduced profits. Reduced profits in Qantas are bad for our wealth as Qantas profits stay right here in Australia. If there is less of it, there is less wealth in our great nation. Airfares are already coming down significantly in 2024, so that's not a problem as well. So many Australian jobs have been protected in the past year. Qantas is now able to bounce back stronger than ever before due to less Qatar flights. For example, Qantas is returning to Paris on Thursday for the first time in 20 years! - But we need this to continue. All countries protect their local airlines, for example why can't you fly Emirates to Berlin? Exactly the same reason.
Airfares have already fallen a lot since then. So that's not a problem.
So happy Qatar Airways rejection day, everyone.
Your argument fails to mention all the jobs that could have been created, and all the money that could have flowed into Australia, and all the economic activity that could have eventuated had the minister granted Qatar's request.
1) Taxi / rideshare fares to and from the airport - hundreds every day
2) Hotels and AirBnB - thousands upon thousands of nights every week, tourists need somewhere to sleep
3) Bars and restaurants - tourists need to eat and drink
4) Sightseeing - tour operaters, tourist venues
5) Hire cars / rideshare vehicles - tourists need to get around
6) Domestic airlines - tourists tend to visit more than one city, Australia is a large country, and i include all 3 domestic airlines (Qantas, Virgin, Rex)
7) Dept. of Immigration - someone needs to process all those extra visitor visas
Above are all the direct jobs that could have eventuated, but there are indirect jobs as well
1) Transport - getting food and drink to bars, clubs and restaurants
2) Petrol stations for taxi's and rideshare operators
3) Cleaners / Laundry operators to clean hotel / Air bnb rooms
And the list goes on.....

And if Qatar gets more flights into Australia, there will be more Australians wanting to travel overseas instead of domestically, which offsets everything you've said above :) Hence will be a net zero change in economic activity, or even a reduction of money to those things you've listed above as more Australians tend to travel overseas than the amount of overseas visitors coming to Australia. HA!

Stop trying to evoke some sort of silver lining. Qatar Airways and their Qatar Government owners want a dodgy one-sided deal so they can reap all the benefits, flood the market, kill off local Australian jobs and extract wealth from our great nation.

Your one wants to make our country worse. Why don’t you condemn the “Hi Alan” and “take your medication” posts for also being childish low-effort troll attempts by the Qatar supporters? Those posters stoop to such lows because let’s face it, Qatar have no real arguments for increased flights that would be beneficial to our nation.
