Hi TJS, I arrived in on the 26/1 on QF98, it was a full flight. The flight crew tell me the loads have been good in both directions.
My recommendation is to stay at the Marriott at the airport and leave at 1230AM. It takes less than 10mins in a Grab to T3. Check-in, immigration and security took no more than 15mins. Checkin closes at 0130 so you have heaps of time.
The PAGSS lounge is pretty much a herding yard for a mix of flights, have zero expectations and you'll be fine. Find a seat and watch something on your device with good noise cancelling to distract you from the chaos.
Don't rely on the lounge to announce boarding because they're inconsistent and have few staff on hand. The departure board monitors didn't list QF98 and seemed to be completely useless and not update.
Qantas (amongst other airlines) seem to have issues with catering in both business and economy. Food is some of the worst I've seen in any airline, which at that time I suggest sleeping rather than eating.
Landing in at midday is great, WiFi on the A330 kicked in over the Aus mainland which was handy.
Give QF98 a go, remember zero expectations and you'll be absolutely fine.

Does anyone know how well the QF97/98 flights are performing? Interested given the less than ideal timing.

I think you've answered your own question in the heading: the timing drives passengers mad.

Looking to flight to Manila and just discovered "super-convenient" timing for QF97/QF98.
