9 available in First and at least 7 in Business! It is very annoying that Qantas does not have a policy for paid upgrades at the airport!
Does anyone have any information contrary to this? Much appreciated!

Qantas will happily accept payment for an upgrade at the airport. It'll likely be the difference between the fare you've paid and the best available J/F fare.

Much more value in upgrading with points IMHO as I agree they will not offer any "special" upgrade fares. Usually the cabin will fill up with upgrades.

Thanks sq421 and KG,
I'm ticketed by AA so QF can't work out the fare difference. I don't want to upgrade on all my sectors as I'm already flying first and biz on AA metal.
KG I would tend to agree but with so much availability coupled with the fact that Y cabin looks half empty 24h before the flight (i.e. lower chances of Y to J QFF points upgrades occuring) it just dawned on me if QF will fly with unoccupied J and F seats.
Seems like a silly thing to do not to maximise revenue, unless of course QF can somehow quantify the cost of the erosion to consumer surplus for F/J and find that the value outweighs the benefits of marginal increase in revenue...

When I look at the seatmap of Expertflyer indeed F seems empty (only 2 seats taken) but biz has all seats occupied but 9 (which are blocked out, potentially for upgrades). Same with Prem Eco. I do think they will have people upgrading (request already submitted but seats not allocated) from prem to biz and biz to First. My experience is that in general these flights go out almost full. Very arely have I sat in F with an empty cabin and often I checked the seatmap a day in advance and it showed many empty seats.
Let us know how things go and have a great trip!
Out of curiosity, why di you book an AA codeshare? Are you member of AAdvantage or did you get a better deal, or perhaps it is part of a RTW ticketed by AA?

KG, you're right. The cabin did fill up in Business. Trip was lovely as usual!
The unreliability of the QF/BA lounge arrangement caused me to abandon Qantas Club. I got onto AA Platinum Challenge and have not looked back since!
It came at a fortunate time as QF soon started flying via DXB. Personally I find it rather magical flying to the Old World via the New World – I have been known to be overly romantic over such things! LOL
