JQ business to HNL or SIN. Or OOL - MEL, or ADL, etc via SYD on QF.

I'm in Sydney and would prefer domestic combinations in economy. I'm currently thinking of combining a triangular status run SYD-BNE-MEL-SYD (earning 70 SCs - (10+15+10)*2 = 70 - with another straight return earning 10 SCs each way, giving me 40 SCs - (10+10)*2 = 40) and hitting the 110 required.

Is this a viable option?

I had to earn 80 SC a few months ago, and I did OOL - SYD - MEL - SYD - OOL. Then another day did the same, except the return on a flexi fare. I live on the Gold Coast, so it was the easiest. Cost around $800 in total I believe, but worth it to retain my Gold membership (particularly as I needed to go to MEL one day anyway).

I think your plan is well thought out, and worth it! Definitely most viable.

How soon are you looking to do this?

I intend to do this sometime in November, as my membership year ends on 30 Nov. I don't find out my schedule for November till sometime in October, so I can't book so soon.

I've also explored the possibility of doing a run to Perth, but going off the ordinary Red e-Deal fares, this is actually more expensive than my triangle. Going by ordinary Red e-Deal fares available now, I'm getting a total cost for the two runs (split over two weekends) of $728.92.

I'm sitting on a fair chunk of points, so I can use Points Plus Pay to reduce the expense, but going by experience a Red e-Deal period for November should be coming up soon and that should bring the cost down to around 500+.

Have a look out for Business Class specials. I have seen them for $350 one way to BNE from SYD and that would give you 30SC (60 with your double). Effectively 120 return. A return trip to BNE, OOL, MEL etc might be a quick way of doing it. And a stylish way :).

I think it works out more points effective and economical to stay to the east coast routes rather then transcontinental :).

Why didn't I think of that! Sadly for me, a Business special just ended - they were going for 400 or so.

I'd agree about sticking to the East Coast - I'll sit out the current Summer Sale, and hope for a Deal period to come for November, for either class, and take it from there.

Thanks for the help!

Have you considered SYD-AKL in economy avoiding red deals (40 credits) and back in business (80 credits)?

Go SYD-AKL on the economy leg.

Then AKL-SYD in business for around NZD600 (book that separately since the AKL-SYD leg is cheaper than the outbound). Book onto the Emirates flight (with QF flight number). Do the status run in style!

This maybe $100-$200 more tthan your cheapest options, but can be done in a day trip and lets you enjoy the Emirates A380 with the bonus of international lounges and an emirates dinner service home!

Hello PLATY!

I'd actually love to do that, but a few problems arise. The first problem is that as a student I'm not exactly in a position to splash out - I basically want the most cost-effective way to get 110 SCs to make Silver, and I'm only in a position to need 110 SCs because I've racked up 190 SCs from being operationally upgraded earlier this year on a Singapore trip.

The second problem with the Auckland hop is that I'm actually on Double Status Credits; I received the email yesterday. As such, I only need to fly 55 SCs worth of flights to meet my target. While certainly a great way to hit 120 SCs in one go, since I'm on a double promotion I'd earn 240 SCs, and I don't view that as necessary.

On the other hand, I have absolutely no qualms about doing a set of back-to-back golden triangle or regional flights in economy. I'll still go cost an Auckland hop anyway, as I should earn 20 SCs per hop in Discount Economy, and then switch one leg for Economy, earning (20+40)*2 = 120 SCs.
