Jetstar today announced a new direct service from Adelaide to Auckland (on a A320) 3-days/week. 'Flights commence 16 December 2013, subject to government and regulatory approval.'

Am i right in thinking JQ having A320 available to do new routes as the 787 Dreamliner comes on board?

Maybe, maybe not. Knowing LCCs, they could just have recently executed an 'optimisation' exercise in which the timetable stays the same but the working diagrams change to enhance utilisation. (I borrow the term 'optimisation' from the State Transit Authority of New South Wales, which earlier this year did just that.)

Such an exercise might free up an A320 for long enough to run this service.

On the other hand, I'm inclined to think that such availability of A320s as you've suggested would be short-term. Once the 787-8s are done doing domestic runs, they'll go international to replace the A330-200s and that means that A320s will be required for domestic runs again. Unless there are additional A320s being brought online - there probably are, I just can't find the numbers - this extra capacity being made available is temporary.

But who knows, the route might be seasonal.

I think (personal opinion) that the 787 is the wrong option. If its 2 class you have to sell the seats in the front to make any money. I cant see this being a business route but leisure

He's asking if the 787s coming online are the reason Jetstar has a A320 available for this. He is not suggesting that the 787 is being used for the ADL-AKL route.
