When i was in Japan the last couple of years i went to a telco and they said there was no carrier that did pre-paid credit cards in japan.
Your best bet is to do some research into the global roaming packages from Vodafone and i believe optus is now offering one too.

If you want a local sim in Japan, you must rent them out at the airport. This can be quite costly depending on how much you use it, but it's definitely worth it and more convenient roaming (I find anyway).
Depending on what airport you fly into, they should definitely have a SIM rental service available.

What Australian telco are you with. Optus has a new plan for unlimited roaming for $5. So $50 is well worth it for your trip and saves the hassle of losing your normal phone number etc.
I think Vodaphone has a similar deal.

You could try bmobile they are data only though. You are pretty limited for choice in Japan sadly.

And equally for those living in Japan, the carriers do not offer unlocked phones period, so Japanese can generally not use prepaid cards in other countries.
