Hi Martin,
The oneWorld gang (QF/EK/BA) would be great.
My fear is I book too soon, and then a couple of weeks later, Big Red has a Y class "world' sale plastered all over the newspapers with QF9/10 @ $7k.

EK is not part of the Oneworld gang... How very dare you...how very double dare you! LOL
Jokes aside, your intended date of travel would be within the peak holiday season aka we the airline will rip you off time.
There is some merit in travelling via countries that do not place so much emphasis on Christmas as flights to London from these places are relatively cheaper. BUT the cost of one way out from Australia to these countries/cities are also unfortunately relatively much higher than at any other time of the year.
The end result is that you save yourself a very small amount to put up with the hassle and inconvenience of seperate bookings and transiting through lesser known ports.
Is your holiday/trip over the festive season, which can already be stressful, worth jeapordising over such small a savings?

The time you want to fly is in general high season. I doubt that there are any deals and it will definitely be near to impossible to snag award seats, even if you have a high status in one of the programs. I would see if you could get a cheap fare ex Tapei, Bangkok, Jakarta and fly business from there and get a cheap one way to your departure port. Often ex the mentioned countries you can buy cheap one ways to SYD as well. It will take some more time to get to LHR / LGW but at least you travel relatively cheap in style and you could consider doing a stopover in one of the mentioned ports.

*just to clarify, travel in Y to your departure port, perhaps on JQ or CI or CZ, they offer cheap one way fares in Y.

I agree with TheRealBabushka,
Traveling in peak season in the time that you want to will be when the airlines hike up their prices.
China Sourthen, Air China & China Eastern have some fantatsic fares as do other Asian carriers.
My best bet is doing some research and check daily on 3rd party websites as well as the airlines. I saved over $4K when I was booking my upcoming trip to the US. I have paid $5,5K for the following all in business;
SYD - SAN via LAX
SAN - NYC
NYC-SAN
SAN - SFO
SFO - SAN
SAN- SYD
