Yes it works for me (tried searching online at virginaustralia for MEL-ADL in November .... and it came up economy and business award seats available, and also works for 'anyseat' option as well)

Alternatively you can upgrade after purchasing Flexi fare, or try calling the call centre?

Sure does and something Qantas dont do: Upgrade at time of booking. Simply book a flexi, ring the call centre and you can upgrade with points straight away, providing they have the seats. From experience I would guess they reserve half or less of the busienss class seats for upgrades.

Maybe I shouldnt be telling everyone as I reckon I get an upgrade 3 of every 4 times.

They certainly do. I have just finished booking 4 award seats to Perth. Only trouble is I had to go through the call centre as when I went to redeem the points online, the screen came up with only the tabs up top and 6 lines of script.
