Looking to take the family to Halifax NS next April/May for 2 weeks with stop offs on the way home in NY and LA (both for a week). Am FF with both VA (plat) and Q (bog std bronze) and was wondering am I better off using either of them or flying with someone else? Was leaning towards VA/partners. Does any airline stand out from the pack or route better than another? Looking at cattle class with a possible points upgrade to PE or Business (depending on points balance and airline)

Regardless of your FF status, I would highly reccomend using the QF108 service from JFK-LAX and onwards to Australia using Qantas. You'll be flying on a retofitted 747 with great features in all cabins. Another option with OneWorld would be to try out the new A321 First/Business/Economy coast-coast service now run by American Ailrines.

If you felt inclined to stick with your VA roots, Virgin America is continually rated as being the best domestic carrier in the US (but that's not a difficult competition).

I fly Qantas from LAX-JFK and return every year, and it's definitely the pick. The planes are never full, food is good, and the crew are all friednly Australians.
