Jetstar looks to be starting with Melbourne based services, so may be a while before Sydney sees another one, and don't see Air NZ using the 787-9s trans tasman (it is the launch customer)
Yeah, apparently Air India's one isn't great. (This is the polite way to say it got utterly trashed in trip reports.) Jetstar's Melbourne services will be the closest to home for a while yet, I agree, but I do think Air New Zealand will warm up on Trans Tasman - after all, it's not like they have domestic marathons. (Hint: JQ starts with MEL-OOL, not MEL-ADL.)
It made me die a bit inside. You go from champagne and sheepskin to brass and bling to... uh... yeeeah.
It would be interesting to see how it goes, though. IIRC Air India had to pull out of Australia because it was losing too much money carrying very few passengers. If they don't lift their game, they may end up in the same pit - all the rich Indians are flying SQ/MH, and all the not-so-rich Indians are flying Scoot or Air Asia.
JAL are 'upgrading' their SYD-NRT service to the 787 in December. It is an upgrade for Y thanks to the 2-4-2 cabin and the improved in-fight entertainment. But Y+ gets the chop and J is the non-flat bed Shell Flat Neo.
Here is the Ausbt take on the JL 787: http://www.ausbt.com.au/japan-airlines-to-fly-boeing-787-dreamliner-on-sydney-tokyo-route-from-december
I believe that CZ want to send the 787 to SYD as well so the future.

Just Air India at present.

Who's "they"? NZ or AI? Surely for NZ the 789 and 772/773 can be mostly interchangable for Trans Tasman use at least.

I thought Air India changed to the B777 recently? Or were planning to?
