Insufficient demand; whatever traffic that would fly this route can still be routed via AKL?

Why would Singapore Airlines do that then?

SQ flies to AKL double-daily, and CHC single-daily. This eliminates the need for NZ to fly to SIN from either port, since they are both Star Alliance. NZ already have a daily service to HKG from AKL, and being an end-of-the-line carrier probably can't justify a flight ex-CHC.

As for CX, it probably has judged itself better off only flying to AKL; it's only single-daily on an A343, which suggests that it's a very thin route.

In fact, the overall problem here with New Zealand is that it's far from everywhere (except Australia) and not very big, which leads to it being perhaps the ultimate long-and-thin destination.

Its also mostly a leisure route without the high yield business fares and cargo to make it worthwhile.

Thanks. I would personally be happier if Cathay launched an A330 service to Christchurch, but I now see why they don't do that. Thanks everyone.
