I have a return economy flight to Tokyo in Jan/Feb 2014 and a while ago in the "Manage my Booking" section of the Qantas website selected exit row seats for myself and my partner.
Two interesting things have occurred: firstly, I have still not yet been charged for these exit row seats months later (understood to be about $90 per person per sector). I recall an old AusBT article about this (http://www.ausbt.com.au/qantas-giving-out-free-exit-row-seats) but I'm only Silver and this was just for domestic seats.
Secondly, the seats still have the "^" symbol next to them and are still noted as a "request".
Just wondering whether this has happened for other travellers? Is it likely that the "^" request is just to note the off chance that I may be reallocated seats for operational reasons and therefore can't officially be guaranteed or are they genuinely still up in the air and un-allocated? Has it been people's experience that you are charged later, once the seats have actually been confirmed?
I'm just QFF Silver. Which I know allows me free advance seat selection, but thought I'd still be charged for the exit row seats. Oh well, not complaining!
Flights to/from japan are exempt from the normal seat selection charges hence why you havent been charged.
As for why its still showing ^ in the booking, this might be because all pre-seat selections arent guaranteed as a late change to aircraft etc could mean that seat doesnt exist anymore once the day comes!
That is odd that you say Japan flights are exempt... I didn't think they were given that when I selected my exit row seats the Qantas website noted the $90 fee. They just haven't charged me yet.
When I've selected pre-selected non-exit row seats in the past for international flights, there hasn't been the ^ symbol. But yes, hopefully this is just to note that they can't be guaranteed, not that I haven't yet got them.
Not sure why, it might have changed since I travelled in Mar/Apr but at the time it was exempt. Could choose seats anywhere on the plane (that a bronze person could as I was at the time) for no fee. Ill see if I can find the quote where it said "except flights to/from japan"
