Qantas has a max liability of about $1700, (regardless of class and status apparently), anything beyond that, just claim travel insurance. If you complain you can also expect a $200 voucher or something like 30,000 points.
You should also notify the airport authorities at LAX and JFK asap. Video will be reviewed and the culprits perhaps caught. They take such matters very seriously in the U.S.A.
Once a TSA security guard saw me put a lock on my bag and said "What, do you have something you want to hide?", and I said "no, take my dirty underwear, I just don't want you guys putting anything in".
There are no controls and you should not trust them. That's why you don't leave valuables inside. If you leave valuable jewellery in the glove box I would expect the valet to take it.
TSA is actually worse than the valet because the valet doesn't have an X Ray machine telling them which cars contain valuables.
Don't rush to conclusions...If you live in LA these flights can be effectively be used as a domestic flight by tacking on the JFK extension to AU - LAX itineraries and taking a 'layover' in LA. Customer boarded at LAX and disembarked at JFK.

Bummer... I would get a letter from the airine confirming this occurred and make a Police report. Speak to Qantas and then your insurance company.

Based on a similar experience I had:

What controls does the TSA have in place to ensure the TSA lock system does not get abused?
We trust them to open our bags for security purposes but how are they ensuring us that this trust is not taken for granted?

Agreed, it should be a two way street.
Once a TSA security guard saw me put a lock on my bag and said "What, do you have something you want to hide?", and I said "no, take my dirty underwear, I just don't want you guys putting anything in".

How do we know that the robbery occurred between JFK/LAX?
QF is not allowed to carry pax domestically in the US. Bags would have to be checked through to AU.
Theoretically it could have happened at JFK, LAX, SYD/MEL/BNE or any number of AU domestic ports from there.

But you have to collect your bags at LAX, go through customs and redrop them.
