What are the stopovers in mind? If you wanted to run via BKK or FRA, you'd obviously go Star Alliance, but if you want HKG or LHR, you'd be good on oneworld.

Definitely LHR and JFK, preferably BKK and SFO, the rest I'm not bothered about and can still find few places I've not been to.

oneworld will definitely do best for you, since BA and AA offering good products are both oneworld.

You could definitely do SYD - BKK on QF and BKK - LHR on BA, LHR - ORY on BA and ORY - JFK on EC (BA subsidiary)/LCY - SNN - JFK on BA A318/LHR - JFK on AA 777-300ER, then do AA A321 new business class config over to SFO. Then from SFO you can go to SYD by passing through LAX (AA/QF) or skip SFO altogether and do JFK - LAX - SYD on QF.

Well to be honest, Star has good options too, like (starting from SYD) TG to BKK, BR to LHR,

Well to be honest, Star has good options too, like (starting from SYD) TG to BKK, BR to LHR, UA to SFO, JFK, then SQ to NRT, ANA to SIN (787) then SQ onwards to SYD.
