If it's free to join, you might as well.

Indeed it's free to join - discounting any marketing you may become exposed to in coughing up your personal details...

DRW,
What is your objective for signing up to their frequent flyer programme?

I'm doing a J class trip from MNL to SFO. Just wondered whether it was worth opening an account seeing as they aren't part of any alliance...
incidentally they ran a J class promo for MNL to US for US$1,100 each way, which I thought was pretty good value. I don't know about their service though...

You've not answered the question DRW. Let's try something different.
I would like to join Philippines Airlines' programme:
A) To redeem free flights for future travel
B) To upgrade flights for future travel
C) To attain higher status in the programme so that I can access the lounge when travelling Phillipines Airlines
D) I don't know what my objective is - It seems to be what people do and I don't want to miss out.
Does A, B, C or D apply to you DRW?

Joining a programme is worthwhile if you intend to fly with the airline often, especially if you are wanting to upgrade using mileage.
I note your other question regarding QF and AA's programme. I'd have a think about my travel schedule/plan and budget to establish the right programme to join. If you choose flights purely on price, accruing miles/points might not be of benefit to you as the chances of reaching critical mass is considerably lower.
