Recently booked a QF international flight. On the payment page it stated the ticket price + the credit card fee. But on the itinerary it had a different amount - an additional $44 was charged. The issue is not the amount but the fact that it did not appear before hitting the payment button. The only indication of additional fees I can find on the QF website is the following statement "Price includes taxes, fees and carrier charges except local airport taxes collected at time of check-in". This is different to the time of ticketing. If airlines know what these fees are why can't they display them upfront on the payment screen? Has anyone else noticed this?
Credit card fees are excluded from Qantas (and indeed Virgin, Jetstar and Tiger) because all of them provide a method to not have this fee, and thus the fee is an Optional Item.
In Qantas's case it is using POLI which is basically a BPAY payment from your account, but via a screenscraping tool that gives Qantas confirmation you have paid.
Not that I agree with the surcharges - $44 is crazy on a cheap international flight, albeit very good value on a Paid F fare, but that is the law and the airlines policy.
Food for thought if you found the flights you wanted take them to a local agent and have them match the price, they earn their commission and you only get charged 1-2% on your credit card or they allow you to pay via cheque, cash or eftpos.

The fee will normally pop up on the payment page when you select Credit Card as method of payment, and disappear if you selected POLI.
