Any problems booking return to NZ as two one way bookings?
My parents want to book a QF SYD to AKL return flight but it would put them over the introductory limit for their new Qantas AMEX (they want to pay with this card to get the standard + introductory bonus points). Are there any problems of booking SYD-AKL as a one way ticket, paying off the card, then booking AKL-SYD as another one way ticket? AMX have already advised them not to preload the card in advance (they said they might suspect money laundering), and that the card is too new for them to get a temporary limit increase. They're also aware that QF would charge an extra $7 booking fee.
I've noticed that a AKL-SYD one way trip is quoted in NZD, presumably because it's the country of origin, and even with the NZD/AUD conversion rate it's quite a bit cheaper than the AUD price of the 2nd leg of a return booking.
Any known problems of booking each direction separately would be appreciated.

There doesn't sound like there should be any problem at all.

There wont be a problem. I recently completed a return Sydney - Wellington but completed and paid for each sector on its own booking.....no issue what so ever.

You can link the bookings to provide a seemless experience. Just ring Qantas after making the bookings and ask them to 'link' the two booking references.
Enjoy your flight!

Book them separately ,the Syd to Akl on the Australian website and the Akl toSyd on the NZ website ,I have done this many times and it saves money !! The taxes are normally lower as well.do not try to link them on the Australian site or you will be charged the Australian rates.hope this helps and good luck

As long as they're travelling on an Australian passports (or another passport with similar privilage of passage to AU passport holders), it won't be a problem. Have done it myself a bunch of times without incident.

Not recommended on a South African passport, you need a return ticket with some passports. But with Australian passports it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks everyone. My parents have Australian passports, and when I sent them the link to this page they were most amused to see the AUSBT community offering good advice and talking about them.

The fares will be different (in each direction). Likely the AKL>>>>SYD will end up a little cheaper this way.

All worked smoothly. I managed to get them on the EK A380 codeshare, so their first time in business is going to be a good one.
