What is the opinion of most about what alliance arrangements Virgin Australia should have? Should they stick to the relationships they have, join Star Alliance or join Skyteam?

At the moment, I think they need to add a mainland European carrier to their fleet -- not being able to earn points or status for flights taken around Europe is kinda poor. Likewise for South America, but that's not nearly as important as Europe.
If they did that, I'd be perfectly happy with them not picking up memberships of the major alliances.

Agree with Chrisjrn, would be good to have a solid partner inside Europe. Etihad owns 30% of Air Berlin and might also take a stake in Virgin Australia under the new arrangement Borghetti is putting in place, so perhaps if that happens Virgin might partner with Air Berlin?
Anyway if they were to join an alliance I'd vote for Star but I am more than happy with Virgin being free to pick and choose their partners on their own merits.

I agree with @Al because I quite frankly do not like any of the airlines associated with SkyTeam, like seriously. Aeroflot. I would be happy with Star because it would improve Virgin's small international destination network. Plus Star have some awesome lounges!

Air Berlin are joining One World thus removing them from the line up of partners. I would go as far as to say you will see a northern asian partner before a european one. When that european one comes I'd suggest it will be Air France/KLM over anyone else.
