My wife & I recently flew MEL-HKG-KIX return with Cathay Pacific & stayed overnight in HK in each direction. At MEL we were able to check our cases through to KIX but staff at KIX would not check our cases through to MEL, although they could not provide a reason for not doing so. I've emailed CP & am waitng for a response, which could take 20 business days. I wondered if anyone else had experienced this same issue &/or can suggest why the procedures would be different. Thanks for your comments.
What was the exact layover time in both directions? I.e. The hours between scheduled time of arrival and departure.
Airlines and Airports have limits on how long they store bags for passengers in transit and these vary greatly. United will only hold bags for eight hours in its hubs whilst Singapore Airlines does three days through Singapore IIRC. Some will through check bags for same day connections only, particularly in airports which close overnight, but most airlines/airports enforce a 24 hour rule.
Well, on that basis, does anything really matter seeing we'll all be dead at some future time?
I'm interested 1) for interest sake, 2) so as not waste our/KIX check-in staff time in future by requesting our luggage be checked through to MEL, & 3) because we can avoid packing a change of clothes in our carry-ons if we know we'll be collecting our suitcases in HKG on the way.
In addition, if the advice from staff at KIX was incorrect it provides feedback to Cathay Pacific of something which I hope the Company would like to be informed about.

Thanks for your response, X
Outward leg, arrived 2150, departed 1010. so 12 hrs 20 mins layover
Inward leg, arrived 1300, departed 1035, so 21 hrs 35 mins layover
ps No idea why my initial post displays in upper case, as I typed it in normal upper/lower format
