Would ditching the last sector of my VA returning flight forfeit the velocity miles from my preceding flights? For e.g. I have completed AKL ✈ MEL, MEL ✈ LAX, LAX ✈ MEL, but decided to not fly the last sector MEL✈ AKL.

No. Frequent Flyer point accrual is sent as part of the post departure TTY messaging. This is usually sent at wheels up or 30 minutes after departure. It is not dependant on flying all sectors on a ticket.

You keep the preceding flights, but you generally wont earn on MEL-AKL
