If I'm flying SYD-LAX with Air New Zealand... can I use my Gold Star Alliance card to access star alliance lounges, but still claim the points for my Velocity account (trying to upgrade my Velocity account asap)
If you are trying to upgrade your Velocity account, and you are already silver or gold, you should earn more points on a VA flight number (if a code share is available on the flight you want) because you'll get the 50% or 75% status bonus, which you won't you get if you book with Air NZ directly (According to the Velocity website). You'll also have the points and status credits appear in your account after a couple of days rather than potentially having to submit a retro claim. All of this depends on there being a code share available on that route, of course.
I'll need to book Air New Zealand so I can get the star alliance lounge access... if the flight has a VA number, I definitely won't be eligible to use my G* card to gain access to the Koru lounge. I'm just thrilled I can access Koru and not need to put the points on my SA account!
I noticed Henrus said he claims NZ points whilst using a United G* card but since they're both in Star Alliance, it's a bit more black and white than wanting to claim poins on a non Star Alliance airline yet using Star Alliance lounge!

I dont think it will be a problem. - Others may have had different experiences to prove otherwise though.

That is, if you haven't booked already. Either way, you'll enjoy the flight. I've always found Air New Zealand great to fly with.
