AA's 'Instant Upgrade' fare type earns First Class rate Status credits on most US domestic routes, and they are usually very cheap if bought well in advance. These will boost your Qantas status with ease, if you are willing to have a nice flying holiday in the States.
Qantas '2 for 1 Business' sales are something to look out for too.

I'd say it just depends on who has the deals and where you are prepared to fly to earn them. AA is great for cheaply earning status.

I would be mostly flying on Qantas and really just want to earn status. Would AA still be the best option?
