Is Air NZ or SQ better for redeeming points for VA flights? I'll be needing a Star Alliance number shortly so wanted to see which of those would get me a 'free' VA flight sooner. (Also wouldn't mind finding out which would get me to Star Alliance Gold sooner).

If you need *A Gold quickest the best bet is AEGEAN Miles & Bonus, that won't help you with VA though.
I think Air NZ and SQ are both 50,000 tier miles for Gold in their respective programs off the top of my head.
