The question that then arises, though, is what are they going to use the A380s for, given they own them? They have no more customer base in China, and while they still have good business to SYD and MEL, that won't tie up more than three of them.

I think they need a more structured approach. Perhaps what they could do is axe one of their two daily LHR flights and then codeshare on BA33/34. I am reasonably confident that this will do both carriers very well, and BA may well need to upgauge the aircraft they use (which is currently planned to be a 777-200ER with 14F48J40PY127Y).

I understand that their arrangement with KL on the AMS service is similar to what I described above. This would free up enough A380 slots to deploy to AMS or Australia.

If you read my post I said when they are on sale at $600 each way. They do that fairly often. Thats $1200 round trip. You cannot get a business class flight direct to KL for less than $3000, unless you fly Royal Brunei for $1700-$1800 round trip. But they almost double your flying time as they do not fly direct. So at that price ($600) it has its merits to many I am sure. Not everyone can afford what the other airlines charge for that route nor have enough rewards to experience proper Business Class, so it serves a particular demographic well.
