Because Delta Air Lines (world's largest airline by fleet size, and passenger traffic) operate out of Atlanta and operate on a spoke-hub distribution model, a model which they pioneered and other airlines have adopted since. In essence, the majority of travel moves along "spokes" passes through a central "hub", minimising the routes required to cover the same area and proving a more efficient use of resources.
This spoke-hub model is why you'll see a lot of Delta flights across North America passing through Atlanta, American Airlines flights via Dallas/Fort Worth etc.
