Qantas - 38" to 42" pitch - 19.5" seat width
Virgin Blue - 38" pitch - 19.5" seat width.
I would go with Qantas on the SYD-LAX service for the pure fact you make likely fly on the A380 or a reconfigured B747 with A380 seating. This would be a superior experience than what Vigin Blue, Delta or United would offer. I would not even contemplate Delta or United .

Qantas.
The 38" - 42" can be found in the A380 cabin if you sit in the outer seats, the middle row of 3 has 38". It is not just the seat that makes the difference. The QF premium ecconomy experience is suprising similar to domestic J. Think of your average meal on a SYD-BNE domestic J flight, that is the sort of dinner you can look forward to. The Beverage list is near identical to the J cabin as well. The QF W or Y+ cabin is often refered to as a 'lite' business product, where as the US carriers really only offer an 'ecconomy plus' product.
Oh and go for QF 11/12, unless there is a last minute substitution, this is the usual A380 SYD-LAX flight.

Got to agree - Qantas. The whole thing looks a lot classier and well rounded, and of course you get to fly upstairs on the A380.

Thank you! I will be flying QF11 on 10/June and returning on QF12 on 24/June. My friend showed me how to fly on the A380 and he also said that Qantas' Premium Economy had won the Best International Premium Economy Award.

Ive found QF its a step down from Business not a step up from Economy for meals and wine etc. It's a pretty good product. On the same route Virgin is good too in a dedicated cabin on a new 777

Don't forget the Premium Economy on Air NZ. Sure, you hop via Auckland for a few hours but personally I enjoy the break and the wine in the Air NZ lounge.
