Speculation on the 3rd unannounced Qantas route from Japan.
Qantas has stated that it will launch a second Narita flight alongside Brisbane (as you probably know already) and I am wondering if it will be a re-launch of Perth services, a replacement of Jetstar's Melbourne flights, or something else completely. What is everyones thoughts on this

My view is MEL given that QFi is not flying from PER anymore.

I don't think anyone at QFi can point to Perth on a map except in times of emergency...

They can manage to find PER in summer for the PER-AKL flight!

JQ is 4x/week from MEL-NRT.
Almost guaranteed that QF will fly on the other 3days imho.

I know that it won't be Adelaide!
Melbourne most likely.
Can't rule out Perth as I have read that traffic is high on PER-Japan route. But would be odd for QF to only serve NRT from Perth and no where else.
Left field? Cairns.

I reckon it will be Perth. Melbourne can be (and is) adequately served (for the moment) via the 4x weekly Jetstar to Narita + excellent connections over Sydney to Narita and soon over Brisbane to Haneda. And then there are the numerous other one stop options of Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia etc
Perth cannot be adequately served on Qantas metal through Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane compared to the one stop options provided by the other carriers. They can't even connect with Jetstar Asia via Singapore. A non-stop service, even 3x weekly, from Perth would put a Qantas group presence in the market; it would indicate to Perthites that Qantas hasn't completely abandoned them (not a bad look PR wise); and would increase Qantas group presence on the whole into the growing market between Australia and Japan while adding a new destination at the same time.
Adding feed from an additional port into the Jetstar Japan domestic network would also be a plus.
As a little bonus Qantas' Adelaide passengers, whilst not having a Japan service, would then have their pick of connecting over Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne (via Jetstar) into Narita and over Sydney to Haneda if they wanted to fly with the Qantas group. Not a bad choice of flights for them.
Of course, these are just my thoughts. No source to back them up!

Don't disagree with Perth, but I doubt QF really cares about what Perthites think.
If QF think they can make money on Per they will fly there.

I completely that Qantas probably don't care what Perthites think but if it generates positive PR and positive buzz they'll go through the motions of acting like they do.

Positive PR is cheap. Aircraft are expensive.

I speculate that the the flights will be from Canberra! First international flight from Canberra Airport. That's why they're waiting for another day to announce it.

They haven't been doing any extra construction to the "vacant" international part of Canberra airport that needs to be fitted, so if this was to come off it wouldn't be for a while. Highly doubt it.

Melbourne is the obvious answer is Melborne to make it a daily flight 4 times a week JQ, 3 times QF but seeing a QF international out of Perth would be good. Adelaide or Canberra wold be left field.
