I keep hearing that Qantas international are cutting some routes, but what routes are they exactly? Is it just the LHR via HKG and LHR via BKK? Or are there others?

SIN-BOM, SYD-SFO, AKL-LAX, PER-NRT have all be cut recently. But over the past decade or so we've seen piles of routes go, such as SYD-BOM, SYD-PEK, MEL-PVG, MEL-NRT, SFO-YVR, PER-LHR, SYD-FCO, PER-JNB/HRE plus plenty of others that I can't recall off the top of my head.

Not all that you have mentioned are actual cuts though.  For example SYD-SFO was replaced by SYD-DFW, which makes a lot of sense for one world, but many have argued that it wasn't that bad a route, but that they only had enough planes to do one or the other.

Flights to PEK/PVG form Melbourne and Sydney are complicated, SYD-PEK was canned in favour of daily Shanghai flights (up from 4x weekly prior to the change) which is great for some but reduced the QF competativeness on flights to PEK as they always require a stopover.

Japan is another complicated story, prior to Jetstar many of the Japanese routes were profit thin, and had huge leisure components, hence JQ operating all Queensdland services to Japan.  MEL has lost out in a significant way as most asia routes have been ceased with only a few going to JQ.  The only true 'Jumbo' flights out of Melbourne is the daily SIN/LHR and LAX A380 flights.  HKG is now A330 and the second SIN flight and BKK are JQ.  No direct Japan flights from Melbourne, and despite many incoming flights from China to Melbourne the legacy constraints on QF make them totally uncompetative.

PER-JNB is currently codeshare with South African, PER - LHR is provided by the 2x daily PER-SIN A330 flights with onwards conections to LHR on QF1/9/319/3345 ( the latter 2 being BA flights, but well timed for connections from PER/ADL).

AS for FCO flights, I dont know too much of the history here, but as I understand it they used to fly from BKK back when QF had flights to BKK form several cities, making BKK more of a hub, and thus capable of supplying traffic for the onwards flight.  As I understand it the high leisure component meant that competition from other carriers made this route sensative to seasonal changes and largely unprofitable.  If anyone else has info to add on this please do!
