Those who cannot afford a $10 increase probably shouldn't be travelling overseas anyway.

Perhaps, but the cost of an Australian passport is ludacrisly high. Currently $244. The UK is A$155 and US is A$203 (including a Passport card for Canada, Bermuda & Sea travel). Though not as bad as NZ, NZ passport is A$162 but valid for 5 years only.

The increasing cost of consular assistance to boneheads abroad probably isn't helping.

The UK may be only $155, but evidently that's not enough to run a proper passport service... http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/sep/16/passports-backlog-payouts-mps

"The passport agency recorded a surplus of £124m over the past two years and awarded its staff bonuses of £674,000"
I wonder how much surplus made for issuing Australian passports. What's the bonus like ... ?

I wish they would make a passport the size of a credit card which could be carried in your wallet. I noticed most customs swipe passport anyway, and if you needed a visa im sure its in the countries system anyway,so you wouldnt need a stamp.
