Morning all, Would appreciate it greatly if anyone out there could give me advice on booking a classic award on qantas. Trying to book a return flight syd to lax return 24/12 and 8/1. Tried all class but have had no luck booking it.
You could try calling Qantas - as a platinum I've had them free up a seat for me in the past.
Keep in mind, the dates you're looking at are usually peak season for outbound holiday traffic plus 8/1 is right in the middle of the CES exodus back to Oz...
You may have more luck purchasing a cheap economy fare and using points to upgrade to biz...
I don't think redemption flights for 8/1 has been released yet. I found one availablity in Business on 21 Dec for SYD/LAX via MEL. None available on 24 Dec.
Tough time of the year. I would suggest, if you have to travel on the 24 Dec, you can fly QF Classic Award in Business to HKG (SYD-BNE-HKG) arriving into HKG at 17:50 and then Economy from Hong Kong to LAX (arrives at 20:35). Total cost $351.50 plus 116,000 QFF. This is best booked as a QF multi-stop.
As for the return leg, I see availability (when searching as one way) in W or J on 6 Jan or J availability on 12 Jan (via HKG). Again, you could try via HKG again but it appears too early to try a multi-stop via HKG (QF engine only showing up to 7 Jan). Other options include Nadi or even DXB. Obviosuly this isn't the best return on your points though.
Trying to book Classic award flights can take up a lot of time, but eventually it should be worth it.
Last year I was looking for a return J class flight for 2 SYD-JFK and after searching the site at least twice a day I was lucky after a few weeks to obtain a first class ticket on Emirates JFK-DXB-SYD, then a month or so later I snagged a J class on Qantas SYD-LAX then an AA flight to JFK .

It's a bit time consuming but keep looking!

Award availability is usually only 330 days out, and even less for awards on partner airlines.
