I am flying SGN-SYD later in the year and can fly: 1)SGN-HKG (Cathey Reginal a330) then HKG to SYD (Cathey a330) 2) SGN-HKG (Cathey regional a330) then HKG to SYD (Qantas 747-400

I am flying SGN-SYD later in the year and can fly:

2) SGN-HKG (Cathey regional a330) then HKG to SYD (Qantas 747-400rr)

3) Vietnam airlines direct on a330

Option 2 and 3 are the same price and option 2 is about USD200 more expensive. All my flights are in J. SQ is too expensive and my wife is scared of flying and won't go MH. I am leaning to option 1. What choice would you make?

I think I'd go with the CX connecting to QF combination if it's the same price as VN.

It comes down to who you have a loyalty membership with in my opinion but the two Cathay Pacific flights would be my first choice.

If your wife's scared of flying, definitely choose the latter option, with as little connections/takeoffs/landings as possible. While CX and QF are far superior in terms of service and seat, I think the main problem with flight phobia is being in the air itself, so VN as a direct service gets the mark - not for you, but for your wife.

Nothing more comforting than a G'day. Qantas from HKG.

No brainer. Option 1 of course. Cathay, Cathay, Cathay, Oi, Oi, Oi!

I would fly a combination of CX & QF. I beleive that CX is upgrading one of the SYD flights from the A330 to the B777-300

Singapore direct isn't an option? They have A380 services. You'll negate any loyalty benefits you forego by flying J. If you lack status with Krisflyer, why not join yourself and your wife to Velocity, family pool her points and credits to you and you'll be 20 status credits short of gold at the end of your trip?

He's flying to SGN Ho Chi Minh City; the code is derived from the old name Saigon. Singapore is SIN.

If you're trying to save money and feel lucky for an upgrade, try Vietnam airlines direct in Y with an Optiontown bid for J.

If it's a flight in Y, then I'd choose daytime CX SGN-HKG, overnight in HKG, and daytime CX HKG-SYD (with option 3 as a 2nd choice).

If it's a flight in J, then I'd certainly pick Cathay straight through.

VNA all the way!
A direct overnight flight. VNA Busn class is no Cathay Pacific, but it's pleasant enough and gets you there in the shortest amount of time.
