Looking at RTW fares, and am keen to credit my Velocity account for as many points and status as possible - any tips?

Have a look in the earn section of the Velocity website. It gives you a list with earning tables for all of their partner airlines. Some are a lot more rewarding than others.

Also, if you are stuck and cant find a Virgin partner, consider using Star Alliance, crediting to a Krisflyer account and moving the points over to your Velocity account. There is a page on AusBT relating to this simple hack.

For maximum points, make use of VA codeshares (that is VA flight numbers on partner airlines) where VA don't fly themselves, failing that Etihad tin is the next best choice. Status credits are the same no matter which VA full partner you fly on (unlike Qantas, where status credits can vary significantly depending on the OneWorld partner flown).
