I thought this question was going to be about lollygaggers! I can't say for sure if you can take strollers to the gate, but it would be security with the issue, not Virgin. If you are allowed to take it through security do you plan on taking it on the plane, as that's where Virgin might not let you proceed with it?
My wife uss a wheeled walker for mobility. We flew OOL - MEL - OOL, and on both legs she was able to use her walker to the gate (the aircraft stairs at OOL). At the baggage drop, ask and they will normally tag it for you and make a note on their mabifest so gate personnel are aware. Security had no problems checking it out when we came thru.
Generally your stroller is tagged at check-in but you'll be allowed to keep it up until boarding, when staff will then collect it at the aircraft door or the gate to put into the hold. It'll be returned to you after you arrive (recommend you deplane last so that it's all ready to go for you).
Best thing to do, to avoid any problems, is to ring Virgin Australia with your booking reference and have them attach in your booking notes that you'll be travelling with stroller and wish to check it in at the gate (they can advise you then if this is a problem, forewarning you at least). There are only some airports which tend not to allow this, and those provide airport baby strollers.
A stroller is no issue for security - they treat it like they would a wheelchair, or collapse it to pop through the scanners if necessary.
Also strollers are free baggage check on VA. It's additional to your normal luggage allowance.
they told me as my youngest is 2 1/2 that I have to check his sto;;er as luggage and pay the extra if needed. Being EY gold I will challenge this at the airport. I have to say that the VA call centre is far more variable than QF if I hit the local guy / girls all good, f I get the Phillipines ? not so good.

Alas after 23 months you can no longer be classified as infant, so no free carriage of baby equipment. Sorry should have clarified that.
I would indeed ask at check-in.
