PVG is far from the city center, but where most of the interantional flights operating at. SHA is the old airport, in the old side of Shanghai, but close to downtown. Also SHA is adjacent to the train station, which you can take the G trains to other cities, like Beijing, Hangzhou, etc....
If you are familiar with Tokyo, Seoul or Taipei, you can think SHA as HND, GMP and TSA, and PVG as NRT, ICN and TPE.
Agree with the previous post, except that SHA had undergone renovation/expansion and is now modern and efficient and somewhat more passenger friendly than PVG. It mostly does domestic flights.
