Can I bring a guest into the Melbourne/Sydney Qantas First lounge if they are not travelling on the same onward oneworld flight as me? I'm Qantas Platinum heading to Auckland and my friend has no status and is heading to Hong Kong (both QF flights). I looked at the rules and seems that if you're Qantas Platinum, it says the guest must be on the same flight; but if you're a Emerald member (presumably with another loyalty program), they just need to be on an onward oneworld flight. (Seems to disadvantage QFF emerald members?) http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/lounge-locations/melbourne/international-t2/international-first-lounge/global/en

It wasn't in the First Lounge but I had the same issue in Singapore 6 months ago and noticed the difference in the two statements. I was returning to Melbourne on QF (me as QF Plat) and my partner was on a flight with MH (with not status), I went in to ask politely if we could both enter the Qantas Sinapore Lounge and to my surprise was warmly welcomed. The team there said as long as your guest is on another Oneworld flight there is no issue or requirement to be on the same flight (although the website does seems to contradict that). Good luck and enjoy the lounge :-)

Interesting observation, there indeed appears to be a difference in the Entry terms between QF platinum and Oneworld emerald for the First Lounge.
Tongue in cheek comment coming, but I'd love to see you front the desk at the top of the escalators in Syd and declare that your here as a Oneworld Emerald, not as QF Platinum :)

Lounge dragons aren't always known for their consistency. I'd just say try on the day, with a smile, and hope fortune favours you.

General rule that your companion should travel on the same plane as you and has ticket issued by the same carrier – i.e. QF tickets on EK flights for example. However it is never hurts to ask politely.
