Why would QF fly to Chicago? What purpose/demand/incentive is there to pursue that market?

Qf once already planned to fly to ORD. It would be a perfect point to get to east coast cities of the US and of Canada. Also It would be the only airline that fly's an A380 to ORD

I know we're talking about the future, but I dont think ORD is A380 compatible yet..

What would it need to become A380 compatible? A new aero bridge installtion?

Could we assume the airport would welcome the A380 and kick in to upgrade facilities?

More reinforced runways, aerobridges, special taxiways and so on. It's surprising that such a big American city can't handle them while even Auckland can handle them, three in fact!

I'd be extremely surprised if the main 3 runways don't already. They've undergone two modernisation projects in the last decade.

ORD will not work for QF.

1. I don't see a market for direct Sydney to Chicago. The whole point of Dallas is so that QF can get to the hub of One World partner American American Airlines to open up direct flights from Dallas to all major cities in the Northern American continent. Not to mention ORD is a star Alliance hub so QF can't get any feed from one world members.

2. Our current market is volatile and not at all like what it was years ago when QF planned routes.  Routes that once may have been planned may no longer be sustainable. If QF is still ken on Chicago we would know about it.  Not to mention the ridiculous flight time that it would take from Sydney to Chicago.

3. QF had already commenced code share with West Jet for Canadian flights from Vancouver on seasonal routes.

This route is very similar to air new zealand's route 2 and could well be great competition for the airline to face. It could be a great route and a new way to reach london heathrow

And Qantas would once more be an around-the-world airline. I definitely think DFW-LHR would be a winner, but think it better for loadings to use a 787-9 for the connection from the A380. American Airlines might not approve though.
