It is possible that QF could fill an A380 on LAX-JFK if they used what they are allowed by the US DOT (any international pax) instead of the more restrictive only QF pax.

Nothing in US law prevents QF from transporting pax between LAX and JFK if they have travel from eg HKG, LHR, NRT, YVR, PVG, PEK on the same ticket. It is only QF preventing them from being used for a route such as LHR-LAX-JFK-HKG-LHR.

May have been thinking SYD - DFW - LHR, the round the world service idea.  Unlikely, with 4 OW services a day already on DFW - LHR.  Perhaps he meant a second SYD - DBX - LHR ?
