I would like to book a business flight flying Qantas from Melbourne to Sydney in the next few months. I have about 300,000 QFF. Why is it that the Classic Awards system (which has no available flights) require only about 220,000 points or so, while the points plus pay system requires close to 1,000,000? Ideally I would like to use a combination of cash and points? Is there anyway I can do this at a decent points rate?

Don't waste all those points for around one hour in the air. You could end up in the last row of J with a cranky FA who is flat out getting the meal to you before descent starts.

If you want to use QFF to fly business overseas, particulary to JFK, a few months notice is generally not enough. You really need to be looking 11 plus months out.
Perhaps look at going to JFK via HKG on Cathay.

MEL>>>NY Only chance you have to book with points is right at the last minute. I wanted to do similar in middle of the year. NO CHANCE. You mihgt book and Prem Economy ticket and hope for successful upgrade but it is quite a risk unless you have status with QF. That means Platinum at least.
