As AusBT indicated in this story a year ago, it never hurts to ask. E-mail a scan of your Qantas FF card to them and ask if they will match it. The only recent semi-public offer of matching by VA that I can recall was last year when they were trying to capture more public service travel following their conversion to an almost full-service, business-class airline.
Give it a go. If you get denied, try it again in 3 months or so. Remember, Velocity are trying to grow their member base. At some point, they'll realise a frequent flyer with Gold is 30 times more valuable than an occasional flyer who signed up after hearing the "award winnings velocity frequent flyer program" spiel at the end of their flight. When that happens, Qantas Gold, come on down!

Unless you have significant forward bookings with QF it is extremely unlikely theyll consider it.
