I flew GOL a couple of times last year. It was on time and on par with Jetstar/Virgin Domestic economy in terms of service.
Of course, Brazilian airports are not the finest treat in the world, but it has nothing to do with GOL itself.

I've flown Gol a lot. It is quite a good airline. Don't expect much, a biscuit and a glass of water or soft drink onboard.
As dimi said, the airports in Brasil are pretty packed at times. I try to travel with carry on only there and if you can try and check-in online before it makes it easier. I'm not sure if they have an english webpage yet though. However if you have already checked in it makes it easier to push your way through the crowds and dump your baggage if you do have it.
Make sure that you arrive there a good time before your flight if you are flying in peak times. But that depends on the airport you are flying out of. Rio Santos Dumont and Sao Paulo Congonhas are the busiest on a normal business day. Any other questions I'll be happy to help, i lived in Brasil for quick a while.
