I'm afraid you'll find eey little comes free on Jetstar! You can pre-pay for seat-back screen access or do it on thenplane, otherwise there are only two or so free channels. I do suggest you pre-pay for meals online, as they're a lot less substantial and a lot more expensive to buy onboard.

I believe it's $9 to pre-pay the entertainment or $10 to just buy it on board by swiping your Credit Card.
The entertainment system works fine, but it is pretty limited in terms of content when compared to other international airlines, suspect because it's more short range type fares.
I can't recall exactly how much the food was, but there are a number of options onboard if you haven't prepurchased (sandwiches etc), you just aren't guaranteed anything.

Options might vary slightly but the last time I booked they were: Beef Teriyaki, Chicken Cacciatore & Veg Pasta Bake (aka Vegitable Crumble). Despite what some might think, the JQ food isnt bad.

I was happily suprised by the JQ food on PER-DPS a few years ago. Chicken curry!

OP, might be good to say which class of travel you will be doing the flight with.
But as you mention school, it would probably be Y economy.
