Does Virgin Australia still fly Sydney to Auckland? I checked today for a flight to see the international service and it on some days it only shows up Air New Zealand flights with DJ codes.
No, sadly not. All Virgin Australia (DJ) operated SYD-NZ flights have ceased, being replaced with Air New Zealand's range of SYD-AKL flights including B777,B767 and A320. Sorry to give you the news because nobody likes flying SYD-AKL on one of their A320's. Happy travels for you.
Yes they do still operate on this route. Flight DJ54 departs Sydney at 7:50pm and arrives Auckland at 12:55am+1. This service only operates on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Welcome to travelling across the Tasman. Since most trans-Tasman planes are NZ-based for cost reasons, westbound flights are disproportionately in the early morning as they leave their bases, and eastbound flights are disproporationately in the late evening as they return.
I'd go with EK. Nothing beats the A380 morning service to AKL (with an evening return service). If heading to CHC, the 777 is a little crampy in Y, though still better than anything else on offer by VA, NZ or QF.

Great advice, I agree, unfortunately over a year late.

Nothing beats the small cubicle that you can fit half your room into - but LAN sure isn't bad.
