The United Lounge in Melbourne (to use my words from a previous post) is a class beyond terrible. I am still getting over Singapore herding its customers into that lounge when they were renovating their own.
Lounge at departure (not transit) when you spend 30-40 min in it is not important at all. Booze and quick snack is everywhere and you have not got time for anything else. I would not worry and use anything - any is better than nothing at all. YMMV.

TG uses the AirNZ Koru Club, but I prefer the SQ Silverkris lounge in MEL over the AirNZ Koru Club.
I find the food better and it's more cosy. However, the Koru Club does have ground level tarmac views and a pool table.
The United lounge is also open for TG's day time flight I believe, but I cannot comment on it.

Do they serve close cans of fizzy drinks in that United Lounge?
