This has been the case for a long time. Only Qantas' A380s have "first" suites but they don't hold a candle to the likes of Singapore, Etihad and Emirates and they cost a lot more as mentioned on this site a week or so ago.

This is not true QF First is price-competitive when travelling to Europe and whose pricing is aligned with EK and most of the time Singapore. Etihad are dumping capactiy into Oz and so are selling at a discount to Europe just to fill the seats. On the US routes they have a much better product than United and so is priced it accoringly (the only other carrier with first). When AA starts into Sydney their First pricing will be aligned with Qantas as a code-share partner. Finally QF's First is pretty damned good...

Whipper, you read this review, didn't you? I know it comes down to opinion largely, but the Qantas first product doesn't compete with that of Emirates and Etihad.

The old F seats on non-refurb 747s are sold as J. Has been the case for a while. Good if you want privacy, but the seats are even older than in the J cabin and somewhat dated.

how are these seats sold on routes (ie JNB) where aircraft often changes between old 4 class and new 3 class?

If something is sold at J level, and you happen to sit in an F seat, what is the problem?
