When will Qantas drop 747s from Hong Kong and Tokyo?

Qantas want to retire 3 747-400s by the end of the year, and the best way to get rid of 3 747s is to downgrade SYD - HKG and SYD - HND/NRT to an a330, but does anyone know exactly when they'll do it? and what specific 747s will be retired? My bet would be from sometime after August and VH OJI, OJM and OEB will go. But I'm not too sure.

Im no expert on this but I think they have a good load on their 747's from SYD - HKG and the A330 might be a little bit too small but yet you do have Cathay Pacific's 4x daily from SYD-HKG compared to Qantas's 1x Daily. Also, will they have enough A330's to fill those runs if they do get rid of the 747's?

QF will likely retire the non- refurb'd when they come due for their next major maintenance checks. I don't believe all 3 are due this year.

With retimings, QF only need 9/10 x 747's to run the schedule. No padding in that of course.

At the moment QF wouldn't have a spare A330 anyway. Personally I think HKG is better served by a double daily A330 than a single large plane.

True, although QF could always pull out a few a330s from Domestic although not everyone would be too happy about that,

Another alternative I didn't mention would to make SYD - HKG an all year round a380, although it probably wouldn't last too long.

Qantas really need those 787s ASAP to help ease the schedule and reopen/create new routes like MEL - BKK & PER - HKG

Well, they need those domestic A330's. They also returned 2 x A330's to their owners recently (off lease). QF don't have spare planes, period.

Couldn't make HKG A380 year round, no plane to do it.

Yes they do, but still a little while away, even if they order the 787s. Assuming they get them, those two routes mentioned wouldn't be high on my list.
