I know that all here is very murky water, but still hope that someone may shade some light as insider. When trying to do so-called classic upgrade there are two extra options â upgrade at gates and try PE if Business unavailable. How those options coexist? I absolutely do not mind upgrade at gate, so would it be wise or not to tick PE option? I mean they may give me PE and I could miss Business at gate or it is incredibly low chances like someone did not show up? From other hands PE is better than nothing. Anyone knows how it works? Also is it worth to write them polite letter asking for upgrade or simply sit and pray for the best? I would not bother for myself, but I trying to upgrade my fatherâs ticket and neither of us have any status, though I have enough points. I really keen to shift him up â he is not young and not small. Also anyone knows how many âupgradeableâ seats on average on A380 (DXB-MEL)? Anyone was lucky enough to get upgrade with measly bronze status?
Actually I disagree with the naysayers above. Your upgrade will be processed prior to any QF staff being allowed on the flight (and paticularly in business). Give it a shot and if your booking is during an off-peak period, then I can't see why you wouldn't be in with a chance :)
Go ahead and request an upgrade, but as a Bronze expect that you probably won't get one. If you select the upgrade at gate option it increases your chances, but you and your father have to be on seperate bookings, and only one of you might be successful. Generally speaking, one's chances of upgrades are supposed to be higher mid-week rather than Friday to Monday.
I would like to provide some details of my experience. I am also a bronze Qantas frequent flyer and purchased upgradable tickets. I requested upgrades to business and premium economy (including at the gate) prior to my departure.
My first flight was Sydney to LAX. I received an upgrade to Premium Economy at the gate.
My flight home was Dallas to Sydney and I received an upgrade to Business prior to departure.
I suppose I was very lucky (considering I am bronze status) as I received upgrades on both flights.

QF classic upgrade strategy.

Don't waste time with a letter. Qantas never read them anyway.

I am not flying - he is flying alone. I already requested upgrade and think if I can do something to increase chances, this is it.

Both flights were extremely enjoyable!
Good luck
